Program overview

Set out from Marrakech on a deep-desert trekking expedition into Morocco’s most dramatic volcanic landscapes. This 6-day guided journey leads you into the heart of the Jbel Saghro, a sculpted mountain range that rises between the fertile Roses Valley and the desert gateway of Draa Valley.

Walk ancient caravan routes across dark basalt ridges, wind through silent canyons, and traverse wide plateaus shaped by volcanic forces. Each day reveals a different face of the Anti-Atlas — jagged peaks, hidden oases, and sweeping desert horizons — paired with meaningful encounters with Amazigh nomads who still move through these highlands.

Timed for the best trekking season from autumn through spring, this expedition offers crisp mornings, warm daylight, and cinematic light across the rock formations. In late winter, almond trees dust the valleys with soft pink and white blossoms, adding a rare seasonal beauty to the stark volcanic scenery.

Designed for travelers seeking raw wilderness with thoughtful comfort, the Saghro trek combines fully supported camping, experienced local mountain guides, and a slow-travel rhythm that lets you absorb the silence, scale, and spirit of Morocco’s Anti-Atlas.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ouarzazate → Dades & Roses Valley

Your journey begins with an early departure from Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, stop for panoramic views of mountain villages and winding valleys.

Continue toward Ouarzazate, the gateway to southern Morocco, then drive into the Dades Valley and Roses Valley, a land of red-rock cliffs, fertile oases, and fortified kasbahs.

Arrive at your cozy guesthouse for a traditional dinner and restful night before the trek begins.

Drive time: approx. 6 hours

Day 2Boumalne Dades → Tagdilt Plateau → Tizi n’Iferd Pass → Iferd Plateau (Trek Begins)

After breakfast, meet your local mountain guide and mule team. Begin trekking across the wide, open Tagdilt Plateau, famous for fossils and vast volcanic scenery.

Gradually ascend to Tizi n’Iferd Pass (2,400 m), offering sweeping views over the Central High Atlas, then descend toward the Iferd Plateau, a traditional seasonal grazing area used by Aït Atta nomads.

Set up your first wilderness camp in the heart of the Anti-Atlas, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and sleep under an endless sky of stars.

Walking: 5–6 hours | Distance: 16–18 km

Day 3Iferd Plateau → Kouaouch Summit (2,600 m) → Igli Valley

Today’s trek climbs steadily toward the summit of Kouaouch (2,600 m), the highest point in the Jbel Saghro range. From the top, soak in dramatic volcanic panoramas stretching toward the Sahara Desert.

After a scenic picnic lunch prepared by your camp cook, descend through remote valleys and sculpted rock corridors to reach Igli, a quiet volcanic basin surrounded by dark cliffs.

Camp in total silence, share mint tea by the fire, and enjoy local music with your crew under the Milky Way.##

Walking: 5–6 hours | Distance: 16–18 km##

Day 4Igli → Tadaout n’Tablah Plateau → Bab n’Ali Rock Towers

Cross the surreal Tadaout n’Tablah Plateau, often described as a natural amphitheater of basalt spires and wind-shaped stone towers. This is one of the most photogenic zones of the Anti-Atlas.

Arrive at the legendary Bab n’Ali, two monumental volcanic pillars rising like a giant stone gateway in the desert.

Camp at the foot of these iconic formations and experience one of the darkest night skies in southern Morocco, perfect for stargazing and astrophotography.

Walking: approx. 5 hours | Distance: 15–16 km

Day 5Afourar Gorge → Ancient Mule Trails → Nkob

Walk through the narrow passages of Afourar Gorge, following palm-lined wadis and timeworn mule tracks once used by Aït Atta traders.
